The Dangers of Digital Distraction: A Child's Perspective

Updated: Mar 23, 2023

I'm doing a challenge.

One that requires me to post 2-5 reels per day on various platforms.

It's building my online audience.

This means I not only need to capture cute moments, but edit and upload them.

"Mom, get off your phone!" - seven year old.

"Mom, look at me, over here... MOMMMM!!" - four year old.

So how does one balance being a mom + trying to grow a business?

I chose the gig economy for a reason.

I refuse to be locked into a full-time job, away from my kids.

My anxiety won't allow it.

My purpose bucket is filled weekly by substitute teaching at my kids school. Special education + middle school are my fav.

But It doesn't pay the bills.

So now I freelance. I help people grow their social media platforms.

I enjoy it.

Have I answered my question above in BOLD? Nope.

I try to be 100% for everyone, and sometimes mom needs to be on her phone... other times I'll be 100% eyes on them without distraction.

Do I have the magic wand answer? No.

Here are some tips that might help.

  1. Set realistic expectations: It's important to be realistic about what you can accomplish both at work and at home. Don't over-commit yourself to work projects or home responsibilities. Prioritize your tasks and focus on what's most important.

  2. Create a schedule: Having a schedule can help you manage your time more effectively. Set specific work hours and establish routines for your family. This will help create a sense of structure and predictability for both you and your children.

  3. Get organized: Being organized can help you save time and reduce stress. Create a system for managing your to-do list, and use tools like calendars, planners, and apps to stay on top of your schedule.

  4. Ask for help: Don't be afraid to ask for help from family, friends, or colleagues. Delegating tasks can help you manage your workload and create more time for your family.

  5. Prioritize self-care: Taking care of yourself is essential to maintaining a healthy work-life balance. Make time for exercise, relaxation, and activities that bring you joy. This will help you recharge and be more productive both at work and at home.

  6. Be present: When you're with your family, be present and engaged. Put away your phone and other distractions, and focus on spending quality time with your loved ones.

  7. Let go of guilt: Balancing work and family is never easy, and it's normal to feel guilty sometimes. Remember that it's okay to prioritize your work or your family at different times. Don't beat yourself up if you can't do everything.
